Over The Roof: RhinoBond

In this new series from O’Hara’s Son Roofing (OSR), titled “Over the Roof,” we’ll be exploring the tools, equipment, and products that have become essential to our success. In this episode, Chris Burge will answer some questions regarding OMG’s RhinoBond System, sharing his insights and experiences with this pivotal technology.

Chris Burge began his career in construction shortly after graduating high school in 1982, working alongside his brother-in-law to frame apartments and houses. Hailing from Durant, Oklahoma, Chris’s passion for the outdoors is evident in his love for motorcycling, camping, hunting, fishing, and boating with family. Since 1990, Chris Bur has dedicated himself to the roofing industry, and O’Hara’s Son Roofing (OSR)  is fortunate to have him as a valuable member of our team.

  1. What features or qualities of RhinoBond do you find most beneficial for your roofing work?
The features and qualities that I love and find beneficial are that the Optiweld technology automatically calibrates to the thickness of the membrane you’re using, up to 80 mil. The unit is digital and collects data to track your daily productivity and the fasteners that have been installed.
  2. Can you describe a situation where RhinoBond has been particularly effective or efficient for you?
Your question was about effectiveness and efficiency. There was a time when we were working on a school, and both staff and children were complaining about the smell of the glue we were using for a fully adhered system. We had to stop and come up with a new solution—that’s when we turned to RhinoBond. With RhinoBond, there was no more smell, no more complaints, and for me, no more headaches!
  3. How does RhinoBond contribute to the quality or durability of your roofing projects?
As far as quality and durability go, RhinoBond eliminates the airbed effect, also known as sheet flutter. It provides excellent wind uplift resistance.
  4. Are there any unique or innovative aspects of RhinoBond that you appreciate?
As far as unique or innovative aspects of RhinoBond go, it’s simply a great tool. It’s comfortable to use all day, being upright and portable. The system includes a fastening tool called RhinoTrac, which features a built-in drill to eliminate the need to bend over all day and prevent over-fastening.
  5. How does using RhinoBond affect your overall workflow and productivity?
Taller buildings require an enhanced fastening pattern, which can significantly slow down your crew. My productivity is at its best on low, long buildings where we don’t need that extra fastening pattern. We can complete a job and get it dried-in in less than one-third of the time it would take with other systems.
  6. Have you recommended RhinoBond to others in your industry, and what feedback have they given?
I met with a general contractor in the Dallas-Fort Worth area about doing a grocery store. I discussed the RhinoBond system and the benefits of GAF’s 20-year NDL warranty. He was so impressed that I secured four additional contracts, completing a total of five grocery stores in just three months.
  7. In what ways has RhinoBond improved or simplified your roofing tasks compared to others you’ve used?
RhinoBond is an excellent system with fewer seams, zero penetrations, and fewer fasteners.

Thank you RhinoBond!!
